Visit by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education and Second Minister for Finance, to China
19-21 November 2006

1.         Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education and Second Minister for Finance, will be visiting Beijing from 19 to 21 November 2006, to meet Chinese leaders and promote closer collaboration in education between Singapore and China. 

2.         Mr Shanmugaratnam will meet Madam Chen Zhili, State Councillor of the People’s Republic of China and Mr Zhou Ji, Education Minister of the People’s Republic of China. He will witness the signing of an agreement for a philanthropic donation from the Khoo Foundation to Peking University for a new Olympics stadium and an amphitheatre conference hall.  He will also witness the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Nanyang Polytechnic and Beijing Information Technology College.  He will also visit selected schools which are deepening collaborations with Singapore schools. 

3.         Mr Shanmugaratnam will also take the opportunity to meet Singaporean students studying in Beijing.

4.         Mr Shanmugaratnam will be accompanied by officials from Nanyang Polytechnic, Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Education.
