More than 40,000 students to join in Singapore Youth Festival 2005

Showcasing a wide array of activities and performances by students in schools across Singapore, this year’s Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) promises to be a mega celebration of the dynamism of our youth. More than 40,000 students involved in performing arts, sports and uniformed group CCAs are expected to participate in the SYF.

The theme of this year’s SYF, Myriad of Colours, captures the spirit of our nation’s unique multicultural diversity and the exuberance of our youths, while giving our young the opportunity to serve the community and nation.

SYF 2005 promises several “firsts” – the Opening Ceremony on 1 Jul 05 will see concurrent performances at four locations around the Esplanade Theatres by the Bay, which will be opened to the public. This is on top of the concert within the Esplanade Theatre. For the first time too, the main events of SYF were ticketed, including the Opening Ceremony. Tickets for these events have all been sold out.

Ms Sum Chee Wah, Director, MOE Education Programmes Division, added, “This year’s SYF is very special in that we hope to provide more platforms to showcase the many talents of our youths as a reflection of MOE’s belief in the importance of a well-rounded education. SYF 2005 will also involve greater public participation with many performances opened to the public. We are inviting members of the public to attend more than 20 performances ranging from dance, dramas to music performances throughout the month of July.”

This year’s SYF started in April and will culminate in a month-long celebration in July. The Opening Ceremony of SYF 2005 will be held at the Esplanade Theatre on 1 July at 7.30pm. About 1800 people are expected to attend the opening ceremony where Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education, will be guest of honour.
