TEMASEK JUNIOR COLLEGE AND VICTORIA JUNIOR COLLEGE TO OFFER THE INTEGRATED PROGRAMME IN 2005
1. The Ministry of Education has approved the proposals by Temasek Junior College (TJC) and Victoria Junior College (VJC) to implement the Integrated Programme (IP) with effect from 1 Jan 2005. The Ministry's decision was announced by Acting Minister for Education, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, at the Sixth Principals' Appointment Ceremony on 30 Dec 2003.
2. As part of ongoing efforts to encourage greater diversity and choice in the education landscape, TJC and VJC will offer a 4-year IP from Sec 3 to JC 2, leading to the GCE 'A' Level examinations. With the implementation of the IP, TJC and VJC will be building on their strengths to provide quality educational offerings and more opportunities for students to engage in broader learning experiences.
BACKGROUND
3. To provide a variety of programmes and routes to cater to the varied talents and aptitudes of our students, the Junior College/Upper Secondary Education Review Committee, chaired by then Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry & Education, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, recommended, among other things, the introduction of IP spanning upper secondary and JC education. The IP would cater to students who could do well in a less structured environment. It would free up time used to prepare students for the 'O' level examinations to engage in broader learning experiences. The Committee's recommendations were endorsed by Parliament in Nov 2002.
4. On 30 Dec 2002, then Minister for Education, RAdm (NS) Teo Chee Hean, announced at the Fifth Principals' Appointment Ceremony that the Ministry of Education approved the introduction of the IP in four schools, viz. the Raffles and Hwa Chong families of schools, National Junior College and Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) from 2004. On 14 Nov 2003, the Ministry of Education announced the approval of Nanyang Girls' High School's proposal to offer the IP in partnership with The Chinese High School and Hwa Chong Junior College from 1 Jan 2004.
